Molecular sieve is a key adsorbent in PSA/VPSA oxygen generation systems. Its performance directly affects oxygen purity, production capacity, and energy consumption. After long-term operation, molecular sieves may gradually lose their adsorption capacity or suffer from pulverization, moisture, or oil contamination.
When Should Molecular Sieves Be Replaced?
Molecular sieve replacement should not be determined by service time alone. It is recommended to check the following operating conditions:
Continuous decline in oxygen purity or production capacity;
Increased pressure drop across the adsorption bed;
Excessive molecular sieve dust or pulverization;
Moisture or oil contamination;
Performance deterioration after other system components have been checked.
Before replacement, problems with valves, compressors, analyzers, controls, and other equipment should also be excluded.
Sodium-based 13X HP or Lithium-based Molecular Sieve?
The commonly used molecular sieves for industrial PSA/VPSA oxygen generation include 13X HP sodium molecular sieve and lithium-based molecular sieve.
13X HP is a conventional NaX-type adsorbent with mature industrial application and relatively low cost. It is suitable for PSA systems designed for 13X HP operation.
Lithium-based molecular sieve generally offers higher nitrogen/oxygen separation performance and dynamic adsorption capacity. Depending on the equipment design, it may help achieve higher oxygen productivity or reduce adsorbent loading.
However, lithium-based molecular sieve cannot simply replace every 13X HP molecular sieve. Selection should consider the original equipment design, tower dimensions, operating pressure, regeneration method, cycle time, target oxygen purity, production capacity, and original molecular sieve specification.
